The Old Man and the Ocean, a Man Become Destroyed although not Defeated Dissertation

A Man Always be Destroyed, However, not Defeated.

Going through the novel The Old Man and the Ocean one, as a reader, may perceive a lot of themes in the book. Various fights can be structured on the way Tolstoy set up the story. Some might argue that the novel's theme was Santiago's struggle, the friendship together with the fish and also other characters, Santiago's perseverance and really ended up as a triumphal man. But to argue that these were also the key themes from the book is likewise a difficult thing to do. Even though Santiago fought and kept on together with his struggle to get the seafood, he was conquered because he dropped it at the end.

Defeat, according to the Larousse Rooms English Dictionary, is if you are overthrown in a battle, you lose a game and thus you don't win: you don't gain or reach your goal. Even as we can see Santiago, in spite of the very fact that he persevered and struggled, starving, for three days and nights lost the battle. This individual couldn't get to his absolute goal. It absolutely was his way of surviving. Santiago's only way of income was fishing. He mentions. " He was a fish to hold a man all winter. ”(page 111). Santiago had ideas for him already nevertheless failed to complete them. A lot of will believe he gained because he gained spiritual success. This in such a way is true, but fishing is his work and only lifestyle. If Santiago was simply fishing pertaining to his personal entertainment it could be seen as a new experience or tale to tell. But it wasn't. Santiago needed the fish and lost it. He had not been happy or perhaps joyful regarding it.

Throughout the publication we get the thought of Santiago staying beaten, a synonym for defeated. The concept of being beaten is shown in 2 different ways: the fact that Santiago is aware it and that he accepts it. Showing the information of his situation, the author tells us, " He knew he was defeated now finally and without remedy…”(page 119) " …it is usually...
